The Battle for Wesnoth is a turn based game played on a hex grid system similar to that of Civilization V and Civilization VI. Players will attempt to control villages which will provide gold which can then be used to purchase/recruit units for battle. Similar to many strategy and real time strategy PC games, each unit has their own strengths and weaknesses. Terrain also plays a big role in unit strength/weakness and the best strategy involves finding that favorable terrain to fight on based on your unit types.
The Battle for Wesnoth is somewhat based on Master of Monsters, the classic fantasy battle game for the Sega Genesis. Available races available include humans, elvels, dwarves, orcs and trolls as well as a dragon species unique to Wesnoth called Drakes. There are six factions that players can choose from each having their own races, unit types and strengths/weaknesses.
The game includes both a single player and multiplayer game modes. The single player mode includes 16 campaigns of varying difficulty. There is also a large number of user made campaigns created through the map editor and modding add-ons available for The Battle for Wesnoth.
Currently The Battle for Wesnoth is completely free to download and play and is available for Windows PC, Mac OS X and Linux PCs. The game’s source code is also freely available. For more information on playing the game be sure to review The Battle for Wesnoth official site “Play” section.
